I’ve had a lot of questions lately about what has influenced me. It’s hard to narrow something like that down, but I will say that definitively more than anything else, I am influenced by the aesthetic of the post-war Japanese art movements Butoh, and Gutai. That period was nothing short of an artistic revolt against westernization and the horrors of atomic war.
The first time I saw a Butoh performance, I was stunned, moved to tears, and a little nauseous afterwards actually. I had this visceral reaction, and I thought, anything that makes me feel at this intensity must be worth investigation.
Initially I went to Japan to research for my senior thesis on Japanese contemporary theater and costume. I met Kazuo Ohno then, and soon after I moved to Tokyo to study in his studio for the next 5 years. Here are a few of my favorite artists and teachers.
